What Superglue Taught Me About Writing
Planning is easy.
Scribble a note on your To-Do list.

There.
A plan.
You feel good about yourself.
You’re going to tackle your goal.
Then you carry on with the rest of your day or week or month.
Your mantra becomes, “I’m going to do it. It’s on my To-Do list. I’m going to!”
But then it doesn’t get done.
Wait.
Let me rephrase that: You don’t get it done.
I don’t get it done.
It felt so good in the moment to add that goal to the To-Do list.
It was a glimmer of hope that things were going to get done!
But making plans and following through are vastly different.
It’s time for Superglue.
Use liberally.
Superglue yourself in front of a computer or a notebook, if you’re a writer.

Superglue yourself in front of your drawing paper, if you’re an artist.
Superglue yourself in front of your partner, if you have an issue to discuss.
Superglue yourself in front of your homework.
You get the idea.
Nothing is going to get you to that goal without effort and sticking with it.
I’ve added plans to a To-Do list plenty of times.
The funny thing is, nothing got done just by sitting on that list.
I actually had TO DO the thing.
Is there something on your To-Do list that’s been there for ages?
Get out the Superglue.
Planning (knowing you have a problem) is just the first step—an absolutely necessary first step.
But then, do whatever you need to do to start.
Light the candle.
Pour the coffee.
Play the music.
And commit to the actual work.
Nike wasn’t wrong when it said, “Just do it.”
With a little creative license, you can change that slogan to “Just glue it.”
It’s the Superglue with steady pressure that gets the job done.

Enjoy your week,
~ Gail

Loved this blog. I’m a writer and that’s what I did. Superglued myself to my computer and desk. Crossed off a lot of “to dos”!
Hi Sherry, you have done a lot of supergluing. Love how you’re helping animals with your picture books and your blog. ~g
