Geek Guardians: Recess Revolution
Today is Memorial Day.
I have a song in my head that’s been playing on a constant loop for the past couple of days: “Déjà vu All Over Again” by John Fogerty.
You can listen to it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiojReSUfLo.
Let me just say, I haven’t forgotten those military men and women—someone’s precious children—who have died fighting wars.
Onto Geek Guardians: Recess Revolution by Michael Fry. (And there is not a fairy or magical wish to be found this week.)
Here’s a segue.
While someone’s child is off in some foreign country fighting the world’s bullies, there are children right here fighting bullies daily.
In school.
On the playground.
At sports camps and summer camps.
Why are some kids so mean?
What hole are they trying to fill by hurting others?
Geek Guardians has an answer.
Michael Fry has written a laugh-out-loud funny story about middle-schooler Nick who finds himself bullied daily and stuffed into his locker by a big kid named Roy.
But the solution that Nick’s guidance counselor gives him might be worse than the locker-stuffing itself.
He has to join forces with two of his fellow misfits to confront their “peer allergies.”
They are aided by the school’s janitor, a cool, Mr. Miyagi-sort of fella. (Anyone else remember befriending your school’s janitor?)
You’ll find snakes, science exhibits, stuffed pigs, Zombie butts and log legs, treehouses, romance, breaking and entering (mostly just entering… hardly any breaking).
No spoilers here.
Let me just say this was well worth the read.
It’s a great choice for kids about to enter middle school.
Geek Guardians includes lots of comic-style black and white illustrations (by the author himself) that enhance the text.
Fry has written several other books and is the co-creator and writer of Over the Hedge, a popular comic strip featured in newspapers nationwide.
Geek Guardians is a reboot of his Odd Squad series.
He wants readers to know he’s hard at work on the sequel to Geek Guardians.
I hope so.
Happy reading…and writing…and creating.
