Writing Exercise for Kids
Imagine you’re the main character in a story and someone has given you some advice.
If you’ve noticed, main characters tend not to follow advice (makes for a better story, don’t you think?).
Imagine the problems that would start to pile up if you didn’t pay any attention to their words of wisdom.
Then go write that story.
Here are some words of advice to get your imagination churning, so you can turn them into fun stories, which are fun writing exercises:
- Never hop off a moving merry-go-round.
- Never do your homework in crayon.
- Don’t let a duck paddle your canoe.
- You should never wear your pants as a hat.
- Never bring a real pie to school to learn fractions.
- Don’t bury jelly beans in your backyard.
- It’s always best to wait your turn.
- Rabbits make lousy teammates.
- Being silent for a whole day is not a good idea.
- Don’t go fishing in a swamp.
What are some other words of advice that you’ve been told?
Can you write a story based on them?
I’d love to hear some of your ideas in the comments.

Hi stranger! Loved reading this on Facebook. I’m back in Citrus Hgts after several yrs in the desert. Suddenly found myself divorced and my kids wanted me closer as I have had more falls n fractures. I could write a book on that!
Hi Denise! You’ve had quite the time of things. I’m glad you’re closer to your kids. Palm Springs is lovely, but so far away. And yes, you absolutely could write many books with all of your experiences. It all starts with one idea…
