What Should I Read?
Happy Monday! (Or Tuesday or whenever you’re reading this.)
Here’s my book list for September.
Flora and Ulysses by Kate Dicamillo (Middle Grade fiction, 2013).
Flora’s parents are divorced and the situation has made Flora a cynic.
Enter squirrel-turned-superhero (because of an unfortunate vacuum incident) Ulysses, whose superpower is misspelled poetry.
But will it be enough to get her parents back together?
Does Flora even want her parents together again?
This novel is filled with endearing characters and interspersed with comic-book style illustrations.
You really can’t go wrong with a Kate Dicamillo book.
Wicked Marigold by Caroline Carlson (Middle Grade fiction 2024).
What a fun book!
Princess Marigold is angry that her perfect sister, Rosalind, has returned to the palace after living with an evil wizard who abducted her fifteen years ago.
Flowers bloom at Rosalind’s feet, and she’s practically perfect and sunshiny and lovely and good mannered.
Everything Marigold is not.
I’m sorry I’ve never heard of this author before.
She has several titles I’m going to check out now.
The Dreamer by Pam Muñoz Ryan and Peter Sis (Middle Grade fiction 2010).
This book is for all the dreamers like Neftali, the main character, who hope for better things for the world, their families, and themselves, while trying to stand up to people who view the world differently than they do.
I did not realize whom this book was about until the very end.
No spoilers here.
It’s the perfect mix of fiction and fact.
The White Queen by Philippa Gregory (Adult Historical fiction 2009).
I’ve read other books by Philippa Gregory which I enjoyed.
So far, The White Queen is every bit as good.
It’s the story of commoner Elizabeth Woodville, who secretly marries the newly crowned boy king Edward IV of York (1461).
Elizabeth rises to the occasion amid gossip, wars, family in-fighting, infidelity, and other hardships.
It’s as much a Romeo and Juliet tale as it is a tale of royal intrigue.
Hope you’re finding good things to read, too.
Let me know in the comments what you’re reading.
Until next time,
~ Gail

Thanks for the recommendations. I’m reading The First State of Being by Erin Entrada Kelly. Middle grade fiction. Time travel and family struggles. I’m about half way through and enjoying it.
I just looked into that one. It sounds good. Different. And current! (I really need to read more current titles!) Thanks, Kurt.
