30 September Holidays You’ve Probably Never Celebrated
We can’t always go around bestowing sunshine and rainbows.
Some days are just “blah,” and it can be hard to find the motivation or initiative to do much of anything.
But doing nothing has NEVER been an inspiring activity.
If you’re doing nothing, you can’t find the oomph to write or read or create.
So!
I have a list of September “holidays” for every day of the month.
It’s goofy fun to celebrate special days.
It hurts no one and teaches your kids that every day is special.
Plus, the more you do, the more fodder you have for your own stories…whether you’re telling them to your kids, your partner, or the world. (And here’s a lifestyle tip from my sister: it’s always good to have something to look forward to!)
September 1-30
1. National Cherry Popover Day
2. National Food Bank Day. (Donate or volunteer at a food bank.)
3. National Doodle Day. (Also National Hummingbird Day.)
4. National Wildlife Day or Extra Dessert Day (make an extra treat for yourself or the birds)
5. National Be Late for Something Day. (Finally! Permission to take your time.)
6. National Read a Book Day. (I’m reading Withering-By-Sea by Judith Rossell. What are you reading?)
7. International Buy a Book Day
8. National Literacy Day
9. National Wonderful Weirdos Day. (Throughout history, people have tended to not be kind to those who are different from them. Today’s your day to change that. Today and moving forward, celebrate people who dare to be different. Don’t call them weirdos, though. Think of a nicer way to define people who are a bit different.)
10. National Swap Ideas Day. (Share your ideas! Don’t keep them to yourself.)
11. National Hug Your Hound Day
12. National Chocolate Milkshake Day. Also National Day of Encouragement. (You can do it. I believe in you!)
13. National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day
14. National Gobstoppers Day or National Live Creative Day
15. National Cheese Toast Day
16. National Sit with a Stranger Day (Build new relationships. Go sit with the new kid.)
17. National Dance Day
18. International Red Panda Day
19. International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Also National Sea Otter Awareness Day.
20. National String Cheese Day
21. International Day of Peace
22. National Dear Diary Day
23. National Teal Talk Day. (Near and dear to my heart. Look up symptoms of ovarian cancer. My sister would love knowing she might help someone avoid this disease.)
24. National Blue Bird of Happiness Day
25. National Math Storytelling Day. (Help math students understand by using stories!)
26. National Family Day
27. National Ancestor Appreciation Day
28. National Ask a Stupid Question Day (and discover there’s no such thing as a stupid question.)
29. National Coffee Day (all hail!)
30. National Pet Tricks Day. Also National Chewing Gum Day.
